»Project's resume

The theme of the project is connected to the statistically sustained findings (EUROSTAT, INS) according to which in the last decades the number of single parent families raised exponentially. In Romania, the main source of integration and support is the family, our country being within the European states where people rely most on the family (according to the results of the Public Opinion Barometers). Yet, single parenthood became also in Romania a “normal” type of family, together with its frequency increasing. Sometimes parents are forced to raise their children alone because of their husband/wife’s death, but, in most of the cases because of the divorce or separation. Single parent families are often victims of poverty because there is only one member of the family with income, fact that gives the single parent family a high degree of vulnerability. According to the statistical studies, the poverty incidence is higher in the single-parent families’ case, 25.3% from these families living in poverty. (in compliance with the Report elaborated at the request of the National Commission Anti-Poverty and Social Inclusion Promoting by the National Institute of Statistics and University of Bucharest, 2004). Single parent often works a higher number of ours in order to cover the financial needs of the family, fact that affects the quality and the quantity of time which parent should spend with his children.
Given the circumstances, specialists talk about the quality of life of single-parent families. The quality of life refers to all the aspects regarding the well being of the individuals from the society. The quality of life, as a research method, regards all the existing resources and opportunities and also the life conditions necessary in order to have access on these development resources and opportunities.

The main objective of the project is to elaborate a methodology in order to assess the quality of life of single parent families. This methodology will be used by the policy makers in their actions of elaborating and implementing the family policies objectives and also in their future actions of improving the family policies strategies.
